Robots and computers are changing our lives and work, with machines relieving us from the burden of heavy physical and dangerous work. Tablets and smartphones have become an integral part of our everyday lives: smartphones can be used to set pleasant room temperatures in our living-rooms at home while we are traveling. Computers control entire production facilities and smart warehouses are in charge of automatically ordering goods. One thing is clear: Advancing digitization is increasingly changing our work environment, which is fast becoming more and more digitized.
Are computers stealing our jobs?
Many people fear they might lose their jobs through digitization. These fears are not new. They already existed during the Industrial Revolution of the 18th century. It transpired, however, that technological advance has up to now created more new jobs than destroyed them. So, digitization also provides an opportunity to strengthen the economy’s productivity and competitiveness.
A study conducted in 2015 by the German Institute for Employment Research (Institut für Arbeitsmarkt- und Berufsforschung) has illustrated that individual jobs are not necessarily becoming redundant. According to that study, there are currently only few jobs that can be performed completely by computers. In fact, it’s careers that are changing. For example, in the future all jobs will include a digital component. Continual in-service training of employees is therefore necessary to keep up with the latest technological developments and to grow along with new digital work environment requirements.
Digitization as an opportunity
Digitized work opens up entirely new opportunities in the workplace. Small administrative steps can be performed quickly, integrated and intuitively via an app. These include, for instance, approving purchase orders, invoices, or certificates. The benefit is that when IT systems take over tedious administrative work, this will free more time for other activities. Therefore, the new digitized work environment also offers opportunities to driving new topics and innovations in organizations and thus contributing to giving your organization a competitive edge.
